THE SLEEPY HAUNTS - BIO

Short Bio:

The Sleepy Haunts is an alternative indie pop/rock band with "Bubble Grunge" influences from artists like Beabadoobee and Beach Bunny, while drawing inspiration from artists of the 1990s like The Cranberries and Alanis Morissette.  Based in Seattle, WA, The Sleepy Haunts makes music that celebrates comic book pop culture while exploring the insecurities and struggles of adolescence.

Band Members:

  • Gillian McMahon - Singer/Songwriter/Vocals/Guitar
  • Josiah Massari - Guitar
  • Noah Wager - Bass
  • Sevastian Dingler - Drums

Extended Bio:

Originally formed while in high school in Portland, Oregon, The Sleepy Haunts was composed of Gillian McMahon and her School of Rock friends, Elizabeth Dupuis on drums,  and Stella Greenvoss on guitar.  Their debut album, "Queendom" encapsulates adolescence at the time of the pandemic shutdown.  Losing out on high school graduation, cancellation of prom, and no yearbook, the song, "Sour Lemonade" captures the heartbreak of innocence lost.

A generation raised on comic book culture and escapism, the new single, "Peter Parker" was written when Gillian was emotionally wrecked after watching Spider-Man: No Way Home.  Gillian wrote "cast a spell" after binge-watching the sister-witch show "Charmed".  While "i want to be maeve wiley" was written after binge-watching Netflix's "Sex Education" show.  The song, "Pissed Off" was written after taking the SATs, and lastly, "good morning, san diego" is a reflection piece on saying goodbye to childhood and moving on.

The band solidified once Gillian moved to Seattle, WA to attend college at the University of Washington.  Although it was Gillian's intention to always have an all-girl band, she found herself stuck with a bunch of dudes.  The current lineup has been playing regularly all over Seattle since January 2023.

Twelve new songs are slated to be released throughout the year, eventually accumulating to The Sleepy Haunts' second full album.

The Sleepy Haunts have performed at Sound Off! at the Museum of Popular Culture (MoPop), NW Folklife Festival, Seattle University's Quadstock, The Crocodile, Funhouse, Cafe Racer, Vera Project, Barboza, Skylark Cafe, High Dive, Sunset Tavern, Bad Bar, UW's Mesh Fashion Gala, and even returning to her hometown to open the summer fair.

It's not uncommon to see strangers get blown away by Gillian's amazing vocals backed by catchy pop tunes.  Head bobbing and dancing usually follow.  Total strangers come away feeling good vibes and asking, what is the band's name?  The Sleepy Haunts' name comes from a random name generator based on Gillian's love of spooky things and taking naps.

The band takes their music seriously but doesn't take themselves too seriously.  The Sleepy Haunts live performances are filled with Gillian's bad jokes and light-hearted banter.  They have dubbed themselves, "Your mom's favorite bubble grunge band."
